PAT TSENG. Antique cicada and bi strung on silk-wrapped cords subtly reflect the colors of jade. By doubling the cords through the pendant, the cicada (5.0 cm long) necklace gains volume. The bi's circular form (5.8 cm diameter) determines both the shape of the necklace and its mounting. Gold clasps and mounting are by the artist. Courtesy of Pat Tseng. FUMI UKAI. Chinese pottery shard mounted in silver (8.5 cm wide) with contemporary tumbled turquoise, Chinese glass beads, 1990. Sometimes the silver or bronze bar portion of the clasp that bears her name is combined with a bi. The two rows of beads are held in position by macramé knots and are visually more interesting as a result. The beads repeat the colors of the glazes. (See Hamaker 1990). Courtesy of Fumiko Ukai.

PIER VOULKOS.
Necklace of polymer beads, drop and leaf pendants; the latter are attached by plastic-coated telephone wire of various colors, 1993. Leaves are 3.3 cm long, made with a cane technique. The large millefiori bead is split in half, with an embedded brass screw clasp, an ingenious solution for hiding the clasp. The appeal lies in the necklace's serial imagery, enhanced by the patterned layers. Courtesy of Pier Voulkos.
